“I’ll tell you one of the great activities is skateboarding.  To learn to do a skateboard trick, how many times do you gotta get something wrong til you get it right? …And you hurt yourself, and you learn to do that trick, now you got a life lesson.  Every time I see those skateboard kids, I think ‘those kids’ll be alright.’ ”

OUR HISTORY

The "I Can" Program, founded by veteran and skateboarding advocate Joshua Cunningham, empowers underserved youth through the sport of skateboarding. Launched in June 2023 with support from The Frederick Douglas Community Center and City of Toledo, the program has provided over 50 completed skateboards, protective gear, and 600+ hours of instruction to children aged 6–14. By fostering confidence, resilience, and community, the "I Can" Program is building stronger, more self-sufficient futures—one skateboard lesson at a time.

"We seek to Engage with Families, Broaden Experiences, Build Communities, and Protective Factors within them."

-Malcolm Cunningham

CORE PRINCIPLES

On Deck Alliance focuses on the "I Can" Program's four core principles of courage, commitment, consistency, and confidence during skateboard classes and small group lessons.

These four principles are the guiding light behind the Earn Your Stripes curriculum. Each stripe of colored grip tape on a student's board coincides with one of the 4 Cs, promoting students' self-sufficiency and efficacy.
